Happy 2014 Foodies!

Food was plentiful around our house over the holidays!

Since once of us has adopted a gluten-free diet (out of necessity) we had an exciting time exploring different ways of cooking and baking.  Gluten-free pies were our biggest challenge and now one of our major accomplishments.  These are available to you if you place a special order through DoughChicks.com.

On the vegetarian side, we made BBQ Nut “meatballs” for one of our holiday appetizers – without wheat products.  They turned out perfect!  If you’d like the recipe please request it!

One of Kara’s gifts was a Belgian waffle maker from her Mema, so we’ve been having tasty gluten-free waffles for breakfast.  They really fill you up!  You can make extra and freeze the leftovers.  Take one (or 5) and toast to serve with homemade applesauce and/or Michigan maple syrup!

Risotto (which is gluten-free) is now one our favorite dishes with fresh mushrooms served with grilled flank steak.  Yum!

Now, for more business news:

The DoughChicks were contracted to do 364 cut-out cookies for Santa’s Workshop through Event Kalamazoo.  Check out the Facebook page!  What fun to do something for the kids of Kalamazoo!

We are preparing for the Portage Winter Blast half marathon and 5k event March 2 which will attract over 2000 people!  We will have post-run treats available for the runners.

We also will be catering lunches to the Kzoo Baby and Family Expo vendors on February 9.  This gives us the opportunity to prepare breads, cookies, sauces and hummus and share it with others!  Yes!

We still make things with wheat and/or gluten, since our family members are not (all) averse to gluten or wheat.  We made lots of Double Chocolate and Almond-Anise Biscotti (all traditional ingredients) and pies for Christmas orders!

Currently, we are at the Bronson Indoor Farmers’ Market every other Friday from 10:30am-2:00pm.  The next event will be January 31.  We will have our usual fare of KaraComets, RawKet Bites and Chia Crunch.  In addition, we will have the following gluten-free offerings: Banana Chocolate Espresso Muffins, Orange-Cranberry Biscotti, Vanilla Cane Crystal Cookies, and MatchaTea Cookies.
